Flyers Alumni support Team Cure CMD!
There is a very close relationship within the extended Philadelphia Flyers family, which includes the Flyers Alumni Association, the 2019 USA Hockey Warrior Classic champion Flyers Warriors and the back-to-back North American champion Flyers PowerPlay power wheelchair hockey team. They are now coming together again to support the Million Dollar Bike Ride, raising money for the Penn Medicine Orphan Disease Center (ODC).
The Million Dollar Bike Ride will be a virtual event on June 12, 2021.
The PowerPlay team primarily consists of players that were born with some form of a debilitating disease. There are a number of players on the Power Play team that suffer from Collagen VI Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD), which is an orphan disease causing muscle weakness at birth.
Some children never gain the ability to walk, while others lose the ability as they grow older. Affected individuals also may suffer from respiratory insufficiency, failure to thrive, contractures, and scoliosis. There is currently no treatment or cure. However, families with members affected by the disease have been actively involved in fundraising and awareness education.
