The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Founders 10 Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit was a very special place for James. It had given him the chance to do something meaningful with his life by providing a higher standard of care for people who, like him, were dealing with a serious illness. His empathy and compassion for others contributed to the impact he made on the lives he was entrusted with. It was fulfilling work and a job he truly cherished.
James had a big heart and cared deeply about the people around him, both patients and fellow nurses. When he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer he would often say that cancer would ultimately make him a better nurse, and perhaps that was why he'd been given the opportunity to work at PennMed.
During the last days of his life we talked about ways he might be able to continue to support his fellow CICU nurses and the vital work they do.
He also wanted to acknowledge the love and support he'd received during his time at Penn, even when he was no longer able to work.
James decided he wanted to create a fund to help CICU RNs pay for continuing education costs. Donations to the fund would not only support the important work of the CICU but help ensure its excellent standard of care. By the end of the day James was pleased. Donations to this fund will not only fulfill his wish but also provide grants for CICU RNs to continue to further their knowledge and enhance their ability to make a difference for their patients.
