Remembering Lucy Navas-Castro

Obituary (EN/SP)
Lucy Letty Navas-Castro, age 58, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023. Lucy was born on May 30, 1965, in Shell, Ecuador, to the late Eloy Guillermo Navas-Navas and Rosana Castro-Castro. She was the youngest of five children, spending the majority of her childhood in idyllic Puyo.

In 1988, she married and had three children, Nathaly, Pedro "Papo", and Ariel. A protective mother, she kept her kids close to her at all times. Working as a dairy distributor, she took Nathaly, Papo, and Ariel on her daily deliveries. She pushed her kids fiercely and instilled discipline, while being their biggest champion. She gave them the love, confidence, and courage to follow their dreams.

As a family, they immigrated to the United States in 2001. Although she faced challenges in the United States, her determination to better her family's situation drove her entrepreneurial spirit. She worked tirelessly for years to grow her home cleaning business, often dedicating seven days a week to it. Waking before them and still working as they fell asleep, her children wondered if she ever rested.

Lucy lived a life rooted in her Christian faith, and was an advocate for the Hispanic community in Delaware. She was always looking for a way to help immigrants find their path in this country, using her network and resources to connect people to jobs, homes, transportation, and more. Lucy would pull over to offer assistance when she saw a Hispanic person stranded on the side of the road or in an accident. Once, Lucy found out someone in her community needed money to bring their children into the country. Without hesitation, she offered to lend the money without knowing this person. She knew the hardships that an immigrant faces in this country, and would fight alongside them with her larger-than-life personality.

Although Lucy was a fierce leader for her family and community, she also had a very playful and loving personality. She was known for using any object to tickle your ear when you weren't looking. As you squirmed, she would giggle and pretend it wasn't her. She also loved hiding behind corners and jumping out to scare you when you least expected it. Her intense laughter in these moments was contagious. Lucy was an exceptionally doting tia and abuelita to the family's younger generation, always thinking of ways to make them feel special. Lucy would undoubtedly come to visit them bearing gifts, and being an excellent cook, loved to make their favorite meals.

Lucy's life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Undeterred, she faced this battle with remarkable courage, grace, and optimism. Her strength inspired all who knew her, and her legacy of resilience will forever remain etched in the hearts of those touched by her story.

Lucy is survived by her brother, Ramiro Navas; three sisters, Mariana Navas, Teresa Navas and Sandra Navas; fiancé, Hernan Torres; two daughters, Nathaly Murillo and Ariel Murillo; son, Pedro "Papo" Murillo (Katie); and grandchild, Luca Murillo, who will forever hold cherished memories of her love, laughter, and unwavering support.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 pm until 3 pm on Sunday, December 17, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a celebration of Lucy Navas Castro's life will begin at 3 pm. Lucy will be laid to rest in Puyo, Ecuador, alongside her parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Abramson Cancer Center, where she was cared for throughout her cancer battle, in the hope of aiding families facing this devastating condition. Donate by mail to Abramson Cancer Center Development, 3535 Market Street, Suite 750, Philadelphia, PA 19104, please include Lucy's name on your contribution, or online by clicking here.

As we say our final goodbyes, let us remember Lucy as a courageous leader, a dedicated and loving mother, and a kind and generous soul.
