2022: It's a world-wide effort!
You have reached the fundraising page for Sofia Izzi for the Million Dollar Bike Ride (MDBR) on June 11, 2022. The MDBR will offer both an in-person and virtual option this year, which will allow family and friends from all over the world to join together on one day for a great cause! We hope you'll considering joining us in our mission, on our journey towards HOPE.

We are extremely thankful that the Pitt Hopkins Research Foundation (PHRF) will still have the opportunity to receive up to $30,000 in matching donations to help fund crucial Pitt Hopkins research. It is especially beneficial because the University of Pennsylvania doubles every donation up to $30,000. $60,000 can fund a lot of research, will you help us fund research for a cure?

Last year, including $30,000 in matching funds that we were awarded from the UPenn Center for Orphan Disease Research, we ended up with over $78,000 for research from MDBR 2021! With those donations, we were able to fund the research of Dr. Simone Mesman at Swammerdam Institute of Life Sciences, University of Amsterdam. The Million Dollar Bike Ride raises money for rare disease research including Pitt Hopkins Syndrome! We are so fortunate to be among the elite few research foundations that have been selected to participate. It is especially beneficial because the University of Pennsylvania doubles every donation up to $30,000.00.

What is Pitt Hopkins Syndrome?
Pitt Hopkins is a rare and severe neuro-developmental disorder caused by a deletion of the TCF4 gene on the 18th chromosome. It is characterized by developmental delays, problems with motor coordination and balance, breathing abnormalities, severe GI issues and possible seizures. Most individuals with Pitt Hopkins never develop functional speech and many never learn to walk.

Since the gene that causes Pitt Hopkins was only found in 2007, currently there are around 700+ children in the world diagnosed with this syndrome, however we believe there are many more.

The mission of the Pitt Hopkins Research Foundation (PHRF) is to support research dedicated to finding a treatment, and hopefully an eventual cure of Pitt Hopkins and other similar disorders. Made up of family members of those affected with Pitt Hopkins, the PHRF is also dedicated to supporting those with Pitt Hopkins with resource recommendations, parental support and the latest medical information. With cutting edge research, we HOPE for the brightest future for our children and children with similar disorders.
