WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
What is RVCL?
RVCL is a rare genetic disease. Despite it's rarity, RVCL has affected our family for at least 4 generations. Only 200 people worldwide have been diagnosed. In patients with RVCL the small blood vessels in the body systematically shut down. Typically, within 5-10 years of the onset of symptoms of RVCL, patients die. Sisters, Fran and Laura were both diagnosed 3 years ago. Fran was fortunate to have seen a NY doctor, one of the very few familiar with the disease. He directed her to Washington University. RVCL was first identified in the late 1980's by Dr. Atkinson, a Rheumatologist and Dr. Grand, an Ophthalmologist at Washington University. Recently, Dr. Miner, formerly at Washington University, set up a research lab at The University of Pennsylvania to study the disease.
The need for research funding
Fran and Laura are currently participants in a small drug trial involving only 20 RVCL patients. Funds are needed to pay for the medication, monthly patient travel for infusions and health assessments. Funds are also needed to allow Dr. Miner and his team to educate the worldwide medical community about RVCL. Many physicians are likely treating patients with diseases that present with similar symptoms like MS, brain tumors and vasculitis, but may in fact be RVCL. Lastly, funds are needed to work toward finding a cure.
Every dollar helps get us closer to our goal
Our goals are to find a cure for RVCL, find standardized treatment to slow its progression, and spread the word about RVCL. Every donation we receive goes to helping Dr. Miner and his team reach these goals. Thank you for supporting us! All donations are tax deductible.
