Dr. Schumacher's Legacy
As a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Schumacher's love of science and intellectual curiosity began. His early experiences caring for patients in underserved populations also sparked his lifelong interest in other cultures and collaborations with rheumatologists around the world. Dr. Schumacher did his residency and initial rheumatology fellowship at the Wadsworth VA Hospital in Los Angeles and the UCLA Medical Center. He was then stationed at Travis Air Force base, and following his military service, had another fellowship at the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. Throughout his career at Penn, Dr. Schumacher held professorships in the School of Veterinary Medicine, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and was Acting Chief of Rheumatology at Penn from 1991 - 1995. Dr. Schumacher published more than 600 medical journal articles and textbook chapters, and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology. Dr. Schumacher's contributions to the field continue to reverberate having studied all aspects of the synovium, synovial fluid, and crystal deposition disease for more than 45 years. Additionally, his legacy is embodied in the continued success of more than 100 fellows who trained with him.
