Support the Philadelphia Writing Project

The Philadelphia Writing Project is a non-profit network of professional educators serving students and communities in Philadelphia.
The Mission:
The Philadelphia Writing Project (PhilWP), a site of the National Writing Project has as its mission the promotion of the teaching of writing as a critical tool for learning and social justice in Philadelphia schools. Further, our mission is to support and provide high quality professional development based on current literacy research while encouraging inquiry and leadership in and across classrooms and schools.

PhilWP and GSE:
PhilWP became a National Writing Project site at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (GSE) in Philadelphia in 1986. Its current director is Dr. Diane Waff, Practice Professor of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. The PhilWP network includes over 800 educators in the Greater Philadelphia region, impacting the lives of thousands of students.

Through a special partnership with the Graduate School of Education, PhilWP selects one teacher-consultant each year to serve as the PhilWP Scholar, which is a fully funded and full-time fellowship supported in part by the Dean of GSE for a teacher consultant to take two semesters of graduate level courses. The PhilWP Scholar also serves on the leadership team during this time.
PhilWPs work is grounded in six guiding principals:
1. Teachers are the best teachers of teachers
2. Writing and literacy are central to learning across content areas
3. Professional development is an ongoing process
4. All teachers should have access to quality professional development
5. Successful teachers of writing are writers themselves
6. Universities and schools can build powerful, lasting relationships

PhilWP sponsors a broad array of programs that reach more than 1,000 teachers, students, school and community leaders annually, including:

- Summer institutes for teachers and principals
- School year professional development and practitioner conferences
- Programs for teachers of English language learners
- Youth and family programming
- Partnerships with arts and cultural organizations
- Practitioner research communities
- Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
